Our Human Resources Department of the Long Beach Community College District is seeking a highly qualified individual for a current opportunity as a Coordinator for Interpreter and Accommodation Services! This Incumbent will have knowledge of interpreting practices, well-developed English language skills, while maintaining harmonious operating conditions at all times while servicing the multicultural and multiethnic student, staff and faculty populations. Additionally, the incumbent will coordinate the day-to-day operations of interpreting services; monitoring, mentoring, coaching, training, and skills evaluation of interns and hourly interpreters. Work is performed in varied environments for example: an office, lecture, clinical setting, classroom laboratory, or a remote instructional setting.

We are looking for someone who has direct experience supporting faculty, staff, and students. The incumbent will be responsible for interpreting lectures, meetings, appointments, and related college activities for deaf/hard of hearing throughout LBCC district including, LAC and PCC. Additionally, the incumbent may be required to sign and support interpreting services beyond normal business operating hours, at variable hours, which may include evenings and weekends. We are looking for someone with a Bachelor's degree with a focus in interpreting, graduation from an Interpreter Training Program and experience interpreting in a college setting.

Applicants with a combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree with a focus in Interpreting, Deaf Education/Culture/ASL Linguistics; graduation from an Interpreter Training Program (ITP); and 3 years of experience will be highly considered. The certifications of Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (RID) or a National Association of the Deaf (NAD) IV certification is required. Please refer to the Minimum Qualifications section below. Duties

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the direction of the Manager, Human Resources the Coordinator, Interpreter and Accommodation Services coordinates and applies advanced knowledge of American Sign Language/Signed English to interpret lectures, meetings, appointments, and related college activities for deaf/hard of hearing to staff and faculty. The incumbent schedules, coordinates, and oversees interpreting services and is involved in interpreting preparation activities such as preparation study, readings, and other accommodation needs for staff and faculty. Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION:

Education, Training and Experience:
Bachelor's degree with a focus in Interpreting, Deaf Education/Culture/ASL Linguistics; graduation from an Interpreter Training Program (ITP); and three (3) years of experience in interpreting proficient vocabulary, terminology, and information in a variety of subjects; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience in interpreting college level courses is preferred.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance policy. Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (RID) or a National Association of the Deaf (NAD) IV certification and a valid California driver's license.

Meeting the minimum requirements of the position does not guarantee advancement in the selection process. Candidate qualifications will be assessed to determine those who meet and exceed requirements, and are deemed most competitive amongst the applicant pool to proceed.

Knowledge of:

1.Adherence to interpreting practices in accordance with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)Code of Professional Conduct as the guiding principle in all duty related performances.
2.Appropriate roles, ethical considerations, and individual responsibilities related to interpreting for deaf/hard of hearing persons.
3.Well-developed English language skills to interpret proficient vocabulary, terminology, and information in a variety of subjects at a college level such as language arts, science, and math courses.
4.Video recording and being recorded as an academic accommodation, or as a district need. Experience using computer equipment, software, and other office technology in a remote setting.
5.Technical interpreting requirements for a remote setting.
6.Platform interpreting techniques.
7.Deaf Culture and community values and trends.
8.Applicable federal, state, local laws related to accessibility for deaf/hard of hearing individuals.
9.Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct tenets.
10.RID best practices and resources available to sign language interpreters for improvement of their knowledge and skills.
12.Well-developed human relation skills to interact in both formal and informal settings with a wide variety of contacts.
13.State and federal laws governing access in postsecondary education.

Ability to:

1.Demonstrate proficiency in ASL and other preferred signed modalities, as needed.
2.Collaborate and work with a Certified Deaf Interpreter, when needed.
3.Proficiently interpret for atypical language learners.
4.Effectively use interpersonal skills to appropriately respond in a variety of situations in accordance with Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
5.Interpret, apply, and explain applicable laws, regulations, codes, and District policies and procedures.
6.Maintain RID certification as needed.
7.Maintain confidentiality of information exchanged in an interpreting setting and follow written and verbal procedures and instructions.
8.Sustain service for an extended number of hours.
9.Interpret difficult and complex terminology, words, thoughts, and feelings with accuracy.
10.Be thorough and comprehensive in providing services.
11.Serve as an Interpreter to an individual and/or a group.
12.Interpret/transliterate all subject matter across college curriculum.
13.Assess and adjust to deaf staff's and/or faculty's preferred communication modality.
14.Employ expressive and receptive interpreting skills to effectively facilitate communication between deaf and hearing consumers.
15.Advocate as needed for conditions conducive to accessible interaction among deaf and hearing consumers.
16.Develop and maintain professional working relationships with staff, faculty, DSPS department, and team interpreters.
17.Adhere to college guidelines and RID Code of Professional Conduct tenets.
18.Perform work assignments at various District and off-site locations.
19.Occasionally work nights and weekends.
20.Provide information and assistance to staff, faculty, and occasionally students.
21.Understand and follow oral and written directions.
22.Work cooperatively with others.
23.Meet schedules and timelines.

Physical Demands

Incumbent performs work of an active nature with frequent interaction with students, faculty, and staff. Requires well-developed arm, hand, and finger dexterity in order to perform advanced sign language. Requires the ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time. Requires visual acuity to facilitate the interpretation process by recognizing numbers and words, and detecting speech patterns. Requires auditory ability to carry on conversations in person with students, faculty, and staff using proper diction and facial movement.

Mental Demands

While performing the duties of this class, the incumbent is regularly required to use written and oral communications skills, read and interpret data, information and documents, analyze and solve problems, observe and interpret people and situations relative to tasks, work with interruptions, and interact with all levels of District staff, students, and other encountered in the course of work.
