Administrative Assistant & Staff Interpreter

About the Opportunity

Responsibilities:

Provides professional administrative support to the American Sign Language (ASL) and Interpreting Education Program (NUASLIE) and the 5 majors in the program (ASL-English Interpreting, ASL/Psychology, ASL/Linguistics, ASL/Human Services, ASL/Theater). Coordinates aspects of three major national events - the annual Marie Jean Philip ASL Storytelling, Poetry, and Art Competition, the ASL Festival, and the NU ASLIE Program Summer Symposium. Supports the director and faculty in coordinating student and community engagement events. In coordination with the Lead Staff interpreter, provide ASL/English interpretation for courses, faculty office hours, and for parents/students visiting classes. Assist student club (ICNU) in planning monthly activities and events. Hire, train and supervise work-study and coop students. Process adjunct faculty hiring paperwork; payment for team interpreters and guest lecturers/panelists. Provides direct administrative support to ASL Program Director and ASL Program faculty. Serve as liaison between the Program and various University administrative units and outside agencies. Interface with the Center for Atypical Language Interpretation (CALI). Attend regular meetings of budget and administrative staff. Responsible for ASL Program social media presence (NU ASL Program website, ASL Program Facebook page, Twitter, Listserves). Recruit, interview, and train students to assist with ASL Program activities. Serve as first point of contact for in-person faculty, staff, students, visitors and guests and phone/Videophone contacts.

Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree required; ability to use Microsoft office suite; prior experience providing administrative support in an office setting. Possession of Massachusetts state interpreter screening or evidence of progress toward obtaining state credentials within six months; successful completion of the written portion of the National Interpreter Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf; Completion of an interpreter education program preferred. Basic video editing and communication and social media knowledge/skills preferred.
