This position is expected to begin Fall 2024 and will be a part of large cohort of new faculty joining the Bellevue College community.

The World Languages Program is seeking qualified candidates to for a full-time, tenure-track position in American Sign Language (ASL). As a full-time faculty member in ASL, the successful candidate will demonstrate commitment to student success through teaching and learning excellence, including teaching three ASL elementary and/or intermediate courses per quarter while creating inclusive and equitable learning environments for a diverse student population. In addition, full time faculty are expected to advise students, assist in curriculum development, participate in college governance and initiatives, and maintain currency in their discipline. Faculty are under the general direction of the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and are responsible primarily to the Dean of the Arts and Humanities Division. Full-time faculty teach in face-to-face settings and synchronous and asynchronous virtual settings, and are expected to deliver in-person classes or a combination of in-person and virtual classes. Bellevue College's ASL program is committed to on-ground language instruction and, therefore, looking for faculty who will be available to teach primarily in-person.


Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Position Salary Range: $77,250.30/year - $108,344.14/year

Annual salary is based on a 176-day contract with a minimum of $77,250.30; beginning salary will be determined by the assessment of the candidate's education and related experience. New hires start no higher than $82,831.36 unless exceptional circumstances prevail. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

About the Department

The World Languages Department at Bellevue College offers courses in Arabic, ASL, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. The faculty represents an extensive range of interests and is committed to excellence. The Department recognizes the need for World Languages proficiency in today's changing world, are dedicated professionals who provide instruction and guidance to our students, and are an integral part of the humanities. Every effort is made to teach students to think clearly and critically, to make logical and ethical judgments and to communicate effectively with others, thus overcoming cultural and language barriers. Essential Functions
  • Teach 15 credits (3 courses) of ASL per quarter at the first- and second-year levels on a variety schedules and modalities, primarily in person.
  • Prepare and implement lessons to achieve assigned courses' learning outcomes.
  • Evaluate prospective students' language proficiency and place them in appropriate course levels
  • Provide culturally responsive guidance and advising with an emphasis on the needs of historically marginalized student populations as they navigate courses and college systems.
  • Hold at least five weekly office hours and generally assist students in person one-on-one and/or both through electronic media and in-person.
  • Conduct ongoing curriculum development, assessment, revision, and implementation through inter- and intra-departmental cooperation and collaboration
  • Participate in department, division, and college governance (such as serving on committees, advising student clubs, and supporting initiatives)
  • Maintain knowledge and skills current in discipline and area of assignment
  • Participate in the life and culture of the department, division, and college, including the college-wide effort to dismantle barriers that can impact underrepresented and historically marginalized student populations


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in ASL or a related field
  • At least two years' full-time teaching experience in ASL
  • Ability to use ASL at or near native level
  • Experience teaching ASL at the secondary, community college, or university level
  • Training and professional development related to teaching ASL
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Deaf culture
  • Dedication to increasing inclusivity and closing opportunity gaps for historically marginalized students with intentional curriculum and instruction design
  • Willingness and ability to teach in various modalities (face to face, hybrid, online)
  • Prior experience that demonstrates communicate effectively in person and in writing
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and in an inclusive manner with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population


Preferred Qualifications
  • Four or more years' experience teaching ASL at the community college level
  • Record of active contribution to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts, whether through teaching, professional service, or community engagement
  • Familiarity with recent pedagogical developments in the field of ASL
  • Experience using a variety of teaching and assessment techniques that engage students and emphasize interaction
  • Experience in addressing disproportionate impact and equity issues in the higher education environment.
  • Experience in assessing student proficiency for placement in the appropriate level of ASL
  • Evidence of effective intercultural communication skills, collegiality, and working collaboratively with colleagues in an intercultural department
