Human Resources Specialist - ASL Interpreter

Penn State's Affirmative Action Office is seeking a qualified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to provide services for faculty, staff, and visitors who are deaf or hard of hearing and requiring accommodation for employment or access to University services, programs, or activities.

The successful candidate must interpret accurately, effectively, and impartially using both expressive and receptive skills of ASL and English. The ASL Interpreter should have the ability to translate complex material and issues using technical vocabulary in both instructional settings and meetings. Assignments may include instructional classes, staff meetings, professional development trainings, commencement ceremonies, and Extension programming. The ASL Interpreter will prepare for work assignments by reviewing related materials, previewing required texts, and becoming familiar with technical signs. Sign Language Interpreter Registration with Pennsylvania's Office for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing (ODHH) is required; applicants from outside Pennsylvania must become state registered with ODHH prior to starting the job. The successful candidate must maintain certified membership with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc.

This position typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A bachelor's degree or higher in interpreting or related field from an accredited post-secondary institution and additional experience interpreting with individuals who are dear or hard of hearing, preferably in a postsecondary setting, is preferred. Security clearances will be required. Interpreting will be primarily at the University Park campus but sometimes may occur at other Penn State campuses.

This is a 75% full-time equivalency (FTE) job. Will work mid-August through Mid-May in accordance with the University calendar. Some summer work may be available. Full Penn State benefits included.
